Sanga to Panauti community hike by Himalayan Travel Consultant
One of the best hikes around Kathmandu is this community hike which starts after taking a drive to Sanga. Sanga is located around 25 kilometers toward the east of Kathmandu. One can see the tallest Shiva statue of the world which is 143 feet tall. If you like to stop to take couple of pictures pay the entrance ticket and go inside the Shiva temple complex. The drive to Sanga passes through beautiful farmlands and mediaeval town of Bhaktapur. The hike starts from Sanga that goes uphill at the beginning to reach the ridge and then passes through the ridge with spectacular views of the valley. If the weather is good one of the best views of Langtang region of the Himalaya is visible from here. The settlements of different ethnic groups like Tamang, Chhetris and Brahmins are observed here. The hike gives the idea of rural lifestyle in the hilly area of Nepal. After passing through the ridge the hike goes down to mediaeval town of Panauti which is also a candidate for world heritage site. This small Newar town is very famous for its Shiva temple which is called Indreshwor Mahadev. There is an active crematorium for the people of the town at the confluence of the two small streams. A complex of shrines are observed at the confluence of rivers which include Radhakrishna temple, Shive temple and there is even a resting platform for pilgrimage visitors. If somebody like to gaze a lifestyle of Panauti by evening there are some small guest house and community homestay.
The itinerary of the trip
We will pick you up around 9 o clock in the morning and drive to Sanga, you can have an optional stop at world’s tallest Shiva statue and start doing the hike. The covers around 13 kms of distance and reach Panauti, the popular earthquake proof Newar town. Visit Panauti and drive back to Kathmandu.
