Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang Trek

Upper Mustang the kingdom behind the mountain trek

Many people before they arrive to Kathmandu have an idea Himalayas are bordering between Nepal and Tibet but the reality is different, there is a vast part of Nepal located behind the Himalayas too. One of these areas is Upper Mustang which was closed for foreigners for a long time. Variegated landscape, culturally similar to Tibet, arid climate and rain shadow area is typical characteristics of Upper Mustang. Open for visitors since 1992, foreigners need to pay special entry permit to enter this area. Environment is quiet fragile and less cultural influence to locals by outsiders is the main theme behind the restricted entry but if there will be lots of people to go there is no infrastructures. Upper Mustang is famous for its very old monasteries dates back to 8th century and walled town of Lo Manthang. The trip normally starts after taking a tricky flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. The flight follows a Kaligandaki valley in between the two eight thousand meter high peaks, namely Annapurna and Dhawalagiri. The trail normally follows Kaligandakiriver upstream. An opportunity to observe the age old monastery, get ammonite fossils from Jurassic time, observe Tibetan culture from very near and panoramic view of Nilgiri and Annapurna are the attractions of the trip.
