Highlights of the visits

The tour starts from Chyamasingh gate located in the north eastern part of the Bhaktapur; at the beginning the tour covers the small temple of Vishnu famous by the name Wakupatinarayan where the people from Bhaktapur organize festival after the harvesting season is over. Nearby the temple there are platforms for elderly people to share their sorrow and happiness. One can take picture with them. Make some change handy as sometime they might ask you for money. There is a small stupa for the Buddhist communities nearby the temple so one can compare the harmony between Hinduism and Buddhism in the same periphery.

After visiting these temple and stupa, take a bifurcation to the area where the Tony Hagen house is located, one can see the remaining building of ancient time on this street. Nearby the one of the main square in Bhaktapur there is a pond and a temple. These types of ponds are initially used to harvest the rain water so that it will regulate the ground water system throughout the year and also used as a supply of water in case of fire in the local community.

The tour leads to Dattatraya square, which has a temple for Hindu trinities in the center date back to 15th century. The ambience is really enjoyable with miniature temples and Pujarimath which is considered as a wood carving museum. Nearby water fountain is worth seeing as it is still active. The tour continues through tiny streets of Bhaktapur and takes to the magnificent square where the five story temple is located. The square is popular by the name Taumadhi square which houses two major temples and some small temples too. Try to discover the Tilmadhav temple which seems hidden and nearby this square.

Continue the visits to Pottery square where one can practice to make clay pots besides observing them. Make sure you have small change to pay for the owner of the pottery wheel. Pottery square is the place where they make, dry, fire and sale the potteries.

The tour again follows the tiny streets with myriads of souvenir shops and lead to the biggest square of Bhaktapur, the famous Durbar square. Bhaktapur Durbar square is the complex of ancient palace and temples. Some of the courtyards inside the palace are secular and entries are forbidden for the outsiders. Temple for Shiva, Batsaleswori, Vishnu, Siddhilaxmi and many others are of great importance.  One can see the statue of the Malla king as he is worshipping his favorite deity just in front of the main palace entrance. The fifty five windowed palaces which got extensive renovation in 2011 were less affected by the earthquake than others. Major temples are already reconstructed after the earthquake.
